How The Ocean Was Separated From The Sky

Before the Waking, there was the Dreaming. And in the Dreaming was the Dreamer. And the Dreamer dreamt of many things, but at this time the Dreamer was alone. There was only the Dreamer and the Not-Dreamer that surrounded it. The Dreamer was of many colors, and decided to pick a color to surround itself with.

It chose Blue.

The Dreamer turned, and in its turning spilled blue from itself into the Not-Dreamer that surrounded it. And the Blue poured out in various hues of blue. There was the deep blue that looks almost black. And the light blue that looks almost white. There was the blue that wished it was green. And the blue that wished it was purple. And all the blues in between flowed in ever shifting hues from the Dreamer and surrounded it.

Because the Blue was of the Dreamer, the Blue dreamed with it. Because the Dreamer moved in turns and waves, the Blue moved in turns and waves. The Dreamer and the Blue moved in turns and waves together.

But now that the Blue was not the Dreamer anymore, it could not keep up with the Dreamer’s turns and waves. The deepest blues began to settle on one side of the Dreamer. The lightest blues began to settle on the other side. Only the mixed hues of blue, what we call indigo and teal and sapphire and baby blue were able to keep up with the Dreamer’s movements. And that is because by being mixed those hues found complementary colors on the Dreamer to hold on to.

The deepest blues blamed the lightest blues for the settling. If only the lightest blues would come join the deepest blues, all would be in harmony again. The lightest blues in turn, blamed the deepest blues for the disharmony. Where the saturations was mixed became a constant pull and push of want and rejection.

But where the saturations were mixed is where the Dreamer turned and waved.

What was supposed to be comfort for the Dreamer became discomfort.

So the Dreamer split the Blue, using its body to divide light blue from deep blue. The light blue hues were pushed away and the Dreamer called that direction “Up”. The deep blue hues were pushed away and the Dreamer called that direction “Down”. The hues in the middle were forced to choose to which direction they would belong. The blues that wished they were green, the teals, chose Down. The blues that wished they were purple, the indigoes, chose Up.

The light blues, now freed from their deeper hued brethren, became as light as their hue. They spread across the new boundary the Dreamer had made and declared themselves the Sky.

The deep blues, became as heavy as their hue. They spread along their new boundary and declared themselves the Ocean.

But both Sky and Ocean are still blue. And even though their conflict was ended by the separation, they found a new disturbance in their depths. They missed each other. Where the Dreamer was, its body kept them apart because of their conflict. But at the horizon, where the Dreamer wasn’t, they could bend towards each other and mingle hues again.

This they did, always keeping a little hue around the Dreamer when it passed by, but mingling their hues in the distance when the Dreamer wasn’t looking.

When you put your hand in the Ocean, the water is clear and without color. You can stand above the surface and see your hand with no change in hue. That’s because the Dreamer is watching through your eyes and the Ocean is behaving.

When you hold your hand in the air of the Sky, the air is clear and without color. No matter which direction you hold your hand, your hand does not change hue. That’s because the Dreamer is watching through your eyes and the Sky is behaving.

But in the distance, where your eyes fail to see clearly, the Dreamer is also unable to see clearly. So in the distance, if you are patient and busy your eyes with other things, you can catch a moment where the Sky and the Ocean seem to disappear into each other at the horizon. That is them making up and trying to resolve their conflict once and for all so they can become one again and just be Blue.

The end.
