Spelloween 2025: Day 14

Don’t mind me. Trying to get back into the groove of habits left behind. Today is October 14, 2025, and it’s time to have some fun. Each day of the month of October, I’m going to put together a little spell that involves one of my favorite tools: Tarot cards.

None of this is meant to be taken seriously, unless you want it to be so. All of this is in fun and with good intentions. All of this is meant to bring me joy. If you get some of that joy-juice as well, then all the better.

These spells are meant to be modified, adapted, used “as is”, or as inspiration for your personal rituals. Feel free to change them to suit your personal circumstances.

Day 14: King of Swords – By My Decree

Gather the following:

  • The King of Swords from your tarot deck. If you prioritize elements, then draw from the suit that corresponds to Fire. If your arrangement of court cards differ, then pull the card that is the “eldest” or “most senior” in rank and/or age in the proper suit.
  • Writing paper
  • A writing utensil for regular note taking
  • Optional: A writing utensil for fancy writing
  • An envelope
  • Clear transparent tape normally used for temporary tasks like gift wrap or placing posters of admired and respectfully-desired music idols on the wall. (Who said that?)

While in divination, the court cards are often seen as representing people, archetypes, or offices interacting with the querent, in this spell, the card will be used as a focus for summoning some help for the spellcaster. With the King of Swords as the focus, this spell specifically summons assistance to attend to the spellcaster. If the idea of summoning spirits does not sit well with you or you are concerned with how little precautions are taken, you are free to modify this spell to suit your personal constraints and may skip it entirely.

The spell:

  1. On your writing paper, write a list of at least three, but no more than seven, topics, assignments, and/or tasks that you require assistance with. These tasks could be something tangible such as deep-cleaning the kitchen, or something abstract such as organizing your thoughts for a project.
  2. Prepare your working area in your usual manner. In this area, place the King of Swords tarot card, the list of tasks, the envelope, your writing utensil, and the tape. If you are using any optional items, then place them here as well.
  3. Pick up the King of Swords tarot card and study its face for a few minutes. Afterward, declare (out loud or silently) that you are the king of your kingdom and that this card is “the mantle of your authority”.
  4. Pick up your list with your other hand. If this is difficult, then place the card and list on your working area so that you can see them both clearly. Recite the following (out loud or silently):
“I, (state your name), do declare by the authority that is inherent in me, that for the good of my kingdom, tangible and spiritual, those persons, tangible and spiritual, that may be of unhindered assistance come to attend me. Specifically, those persons that may attend to the following needs.”
  5. Turn your attention to the list and recite the following (out loud or silently). Note that you will read each task with a phrase before and after the task itself.
“I call upon the Minister of [task name], specifically, upon the person that can help me complete [full description of task]. I, your King, call upon you. Come and attend.”
  6. Repeat Step 5 for each individual task.
  7. Once you have summoned a minister to attend you for each task, pick up your writing utensil (or your fancy writing utensil if you have one). Turn to the King of Swords card and say (out loud or silently):
“Such is the mantle of my authority. See now, the mark of my authority. As I confirm these commands, so may they be obeyed.”
  8. Sign your list with your most fanciful of signatures. If you use a stamp as a formal signature, use that. If you use ideograms as your fanciful mark, then use that.
  9. Once the signature is dry, fold the paper if necessary and place it in the envelope. Close the envelope but do not activate any glue.
  10. Instead, use a piece of clear tape to “seal” the envelope. Use the tarot card to scrape (gently if the card is delicate) the tape, confirming the seal.
  11. Hold the King of Swords card in your hand as if it were a scepter and recite:
“As I, the King, have commanded, so it will be done.”
  12. Close your working area in your usual fashion and return the King of Swords tarot card to its proper deck.
  13. Place the sealed envelope with your important papers. As the tasks are completed, open the envelope and mark the task as complete. Dismiss the “person” that assisted you with thanks and regal graciousness. Seal the envelope with tape scraped shut with the tarot card each time.
  14. You may repeat this spell to update or reformulate your regal commands.

How is this spell different from the 9 of Coins “As You Command” spell? The 9 of Coins spell gathers assistance but then keeps them one degree away from you. The work is completed with your oversight but not with your involvement. This King of Swords “By My Decree” spell gathers assistance that remains at hand. The additional help acts according to your will and direct involvement, if not working side by side. As such, be prepared for a friend or neutral party to suddenly decide they should be involved in one of your written tasks.
