Spelloween 2025: Day 19

Don’t mind me. Trying to get back into the groove of habits left behind. Today is October 19, 2025, and it’s time to have some fun. Each day of the month of October, I’m going to put together a little spell that involves one of my favorite tools: Tarot cards.

None of this is meant to be taken seriously, unless you want to do just that. All of this is in fun and with good intentions. All of this is meant to bring me joy. If you get some of that joy-juice as well, then all the better.

These spells are meant to be modified, adapted, used “as is”, or as inspiration for your personal rituals. Feel free to change them to suit your personal circumstances.

Day 19: The Sun – Paid With Exposure

Gather the following:

  • The Sun tarot card. If you are using an alternative deck, then pull the card that corresponds with “illumination” or “revelation”.
  • Optional: A copy of your chosen card.
  • A small jar with a flat screw-on lid and a clear bottom. A 1/4 cup recycled spice jar is a good size for this work.
  • Optional: An unmarked index card, or white paper of approximate size.
  • Optional: Markers, crayons, colored pens, colored pencils, and other craft marking tools.
  • A small note paper, or plain white paper cut to a size that you can fold and place in the small jar.
  • Writing utensil, if not already gathered with the crafting supplies.
  • A candleholder that can sit on top of the closed jar, along with a candle that will safely fit the candleholder. The candle must be of a minimum one-hour burn time.
  • Optional: A flashlight that can sit (light pointed down) on the open jar, without going into the jar.
  • Optional: A ceramic plate with a flat surface.

I didn’t like the spell that first came to me when I sat with the Sun tarot card. I have deliberately avoided any spells that could be used as weapons against other people. At least, that’s what I have been telling myself until the Sun revealed to me otherwise. It would not take much to change a spell for self-improvement to become a spell for other’s hindrance. The glass of water that refreshes the one can hold enough to drown the other.

And so, I became this spell’s first target even before it was written, as it was laid out in my mind’s eye. A bright light exposes many details, and rare is the shadow that can withstand the sun. When faced with such an illumination, what happens next is up to the one being exposed. Do you look at the flaws that you may or may not have known was present? Or do you rush to hide away that you are not willing to acknowledge?

If you turn this light onto something else… onto someone else… make sure you are prepared to see something unexpected. Perhaps, even ugly. Make peace with yourself when what you thought was beauty is revealed to be a trick of light.

The spell:

  1. Consider in advance if you are going to use a copy of your chosen tarot card as there will be the slight chance of the card being exposed to flame and/or ash. Also, if your chosen card does not have a representation of the Sun itself, then make a “Sun” card using your personal skills. What images, glyphs, words, and/or ideograms you use to create this personal Sun card is up to you.
  2. On your writing paper, write what you want to see exposed and illuminated. Write small but make sure the words are legible. Avoid the use of acronyms and shorthands. Be deliberate about your target.
  3. Prepare your working area, and place your card(s), the inscribed paper, the jar with lid, and the candle holder with candle or the flashlight.
  4. If you are using the ceramic plate, place the plate in the middle of the working area. Place your tarot card in the middle of the working area, or on the plate if used. If you created a copy of the Sun card or a personal Sun card, use that instead.
  5. Place the jar on the card. It is okay if the jar is not a “neat” fit on the card, only that the bottom of the card is clear. You may decorate the interior or exterior of the sides of the jar as you desire.
  6. Take up the inscribed paper and hold it above the working area as if presenting it to a silent observer before you. You may speak words if you feel this is needed. You may remain silent if this works better to your nature. Once you feel ready, fold the inscribed paper and place it in the jar. The folded paper needs to be completely contained in the jar.
  7. If you are using a flashlight, turn on the flashlight and place it (light down) over the open jar. Otherwise, cap the jar and place the candleholder on the closed lid. Light the candle.
  8. Say (out loud or silently):
    “Light Unyielding,
    Light Pervading,
    Light Infusing,
    Light Abrading.
    Let all be revealed.”
  9. Leave the working in place for at least one hour, if possible. Otherwise, leave it in place for as long as you are willing to leave it safely. This means you can leave it until the candle has self-extinguished or the flashlight’s battery fails.
  10. At the end of your designated time, you may disassemble your working. If you want to repeat this working, keep the inscribed paper in the jar. If you used a candle, then keep the jar closed and do not open it until it is time to discard the materials. If you used a flashlight, then cap the jar, and keep it capped until you repeat the spell. Either way, the jar must be kept capped when not in an active working.
  11. Once it is time to discard the materials, you may burn the inscribed paper to ashes, or may cut it up and discard the pieces via water (toilet or stream).

Do keep in mind, the same sunlight that encourages flowers to bloom can sear unprotected skin.
