Spelloween 2025: Day 6

Don’t mind me. Trying to get back into the groove of habits left behind. Today is October 6, 2025, and it’s time to have some fun. Each day of the month of October, I’m going to put together a little spell that involves one of my favorite tools: Tarot cards.

None of this is meant to be taken seriously, unless you want it to be so. All of this is in fun and with good intentions. All of this is meant to bring me joy. If you get some of that joy-juice as well, then all the better. However, I am giving my tarot deck a little side eye because after all that shuffling and cutting and randomization and stuff, I get…

Day 6: 7 of Wands – Out Of A Clear Blue Sky

Gather the following:

  • The 7 of Wands from your tarot deck. If you prioritize elemental systems, use the suit that corresponds to Air.
  • Something to focus your sight on, such as a candle (flame or LED), a pretty rock, a ring, a token, or a bauble that you won’t mind staring at for a while. If you are not able to stare at a thing, pick something that you can hold the idea of in your mind’s eye. If you lack the skill to imagine or idealize a thing, use an idea or concept that you can keep your mental focus on.
  • A piece of paper large enough to not only write on, but to fold over/around your card of choice.
  • A sheet of paper to write notes on later.
  • A writing utensil.
  • Optional: A timer.

The spell:

  1. Where the 8 of Wands spell was about choosing from an abundance of options, this 7 of Wands spell is about making the most of that decision. On your piece of paper, write the name or key topic of something that you’re trying to work on but feel blocked or “stuck”. If you are able to identify what about the topic you are stuck on, write those obstacles down as well.
  2. Place the notepaper and writing utensil within your reach off to the side. Ideally, you will not have to reach over the center of your working area to write your notes.
  3. Pick up the tarot card with your dominant hand and the inscribed paper with your other hand. You can also use one or two hands to pick up and hold the tarot card while leaving the paper on the table. A minimal touch-alternative is to place the tarot card in the center of your field of view while placing the inscribed paper just to the side so you can still see it clearly.
  4. With your mental focus on the tarot card (we’ll get to the bauble in a bit), read (out loud or silently to yourself) what you have written on the inscribed paper. At the end, declare (out loud or silently to yourself) that this is the matter that will fill your thoughts and that it will be examined to fullness. (Feel free to change the wording to suit your topic and your situation.)
  5. Wrap the card with the inscribed paper with the words facing the front of the card if possible. Place the wrapped card on the table. Place your bauble, your object of focus on the card. If you are using a lit candle, you may place a heat safe object between the card and the candle holder such as a trivet. (Flame is not required for this spell.)
  6. Optional: This spell may have you seated for some time. You may use the timer to limit how long you are present for the spell. Set and start the timer according to how long you can remain seated without causing harm to your self.
  7. Close your eyes. Take a calming and centering breath. Say (out loud or silently): “Seven winds fill the vaults of the sky. Seven winds carry knowledge from on high. Seven thoughts uncover the treasure in my mind. Seven thoughts reveal all there is to find.”
  8. Open your eyes and focus on the bauble.
  9. If you are able, clear your mind of unnecessary thought. If you require something to focus your thoughts on, let your mind dwell on the nature and presence of the bauble. If watching the bauble is uncomfortable, close your eyes again.
  10. Be amused at how loud the mind can be when you’re trying not to think about anything at all. Acknowledge the amusement, put it aside, and return to your focus.
  11. As you sit there, thoughts about everything except the inscribed topic will come to you. This is normal. When you find your mind drifting away, return to the inscribed topic.
  12. When thoughts about the inscribed topic come to you, write them down on the notepaper. Don’t judge whether the thoughts are fanciful or serious, achievable or fantastic, wild imagination or inspired revelation. That comes later.
  13. When you feel you have thought all the thoughts that can be thought, or when the optional timer rings, whichever comes first, return your attention and sight to the bauble.
  14. Say (out loud or silently): “Seven winds return to the vaults of the sky. Seven winds that left knowledge from on high. Seven thoughts revealing the treasure in my mind. Seven thoughts that left all there is to find.”
  15. (If you used a lit candle, extinguish the candle.) Remove the bauble from the card and unwrap it. Compare the topics and obstacles you had written down at the beginning against the thoughts you wrote down during the long sit.
  16. If you are going to repeat this spell, take a break first. Take care of the body and do things that don’t require much thought to rest your mind. Don’t try to have many long sits in one day.
  17. Keep the inscribed papers for your personal notes and return the card to your tarot deck.

When comparing the obstacles to the revealed thoughts, did anything strike you as completely silly and absurd? Why? What of the revealed thoughts that seem not to fit with what you normally would accept? What if you considered that suggestion from a different context or “voice”? Would it still seem out of place? Which of the revealed thoughts appear to be self-reinforcing reasons to not do the thing? What “widely accepted” advice is not so acceptable after all? What would it hurt to try “the other way” after all?
