Spelloween 2025: Day 7

Don’t mind me. Trying to get back into the groove of habits left behind. Today is October 7, 2025, and it’s time to have some fun. Each day of the month of October, I’m going to put together a little spell that involves one of my favorite tools: Tarot cards.

None of this is meant to be taken seriously, unless you want it to be so. All of this is in fun and with good intentions. All of this is meant to bring me joy. If you get some of that joy-juice as well, then all the better.

These spells are meant to be modified, adapted, and used “as is” or as inspiration for your personal rituals.

Day 7: The Lovers – A Mutual Commitment

Gather the following:

  • The Lovers card from your tarot deck or equivalent. If you are not using tarot, then get the card (or token) that corresponds to the concept of “commitment”.
  • A copy of the card that you have chosen. Could be a photocopy you made yourself of your personal card. Could be something that you downloaded for Fair Use and printed at your personal convenience. However you obtain the copy, leave the back side plain. It’s okay if the image on the front bleeds through. Most likely you used plain paper to make the copy, not high-quality cardstock. (Unless that’s how you roll.) Trim/cut any excess paper from the copied card so that it is the size of the original to the best of your ability.
  • Something to prop up the tarot card, such as a picture frame, paper holder, or an aesthetically pleasing rock that the card can be placed against. If using a token (not a card), then something to elevate the token from the surface of the table.
  • If you are using a token, then obtain a picture/image of that token. The picture should be about the size of an index card, and must fit the envelope noted later in this list.
  • A writing utensil, indelible ink preferred.
  • An envelope with a matching plain note card. You can also use a folded sheet of paper (double or trifold) that fits the envelope. The envelope must be large enough to hold the inscribed copy without folding it.
  • Plain tape or glue.
  • A candle (flame or LED) or other light source separate from the light you need to do all this by. If using a flame candle, use a candle holder that will prevent wax from running onto the supporting surface and will isolate anything under the candle holder from heat. Practice fire-safety.

The spell:

  1. On the back of the copied card, write the name of what you have made a commitment to that you want to either formalize and/or deepen. This could be a relationship, an offer of employment, a college enrollment, the care of others, to purchase a home, an initiation into a religion or private community, or even to abstain from such a dedication. The key thing is if you are committing to a person, that this is a relationship already in progress. If you are using this spell to commit to a relationship that is not reciprocal, you are putting yourself in harm’s way. If there is space left over, fill that space by writing how you expect your commitment to be reciprocated and what you are (realistically) expecting to receive.
  2. Prepare your working area according to your needs and habits. On that working area, place the candle on the far side of the area, but not so far that you cannot reach it. You will be moving it later. Do not light it yet. If you are right handed, place the tarot card (and its stand) to the right of the working area. If you are left handed, place it to the left. The card should be propped up as if to “witness” the work you are about to do. If using a token, the token should be elevated from the surface of the table as if it is “watching” your work unfold.
  3. In the middle of the working area, place your envelope, the notecard/paper that fits the envelope, the copy of your tarot card (face up), and the writing utensil.
  4. Have the tape or glue within reach, but it does not need to be in the working area.
  5. Calm yourself. When you are ready, declare (out loud or silently) that the working is about to begin, so let those present be silent and to witness.
  6. Light the candle. (Turn on the light source.)
  7. Pick up the inscribed copy, declare that you have made a decision and a commitment, then recite what you have written on the back of the copy. Place the inscribed copy back on the working area.
  8. Pick up the writing utensil, and on the blank notecard/paper insert, write in large letters as clearly as you can: “This is a mutual commitment.” Write this sentence three times in total. (If you cannot write this, you may have it written or printed on the notecard/paper insert in advance. At this step, instead of writing it, hold the notecard/paper insert and recite (out loud or silently) the sentence three times.)
  9. Insert your inscribed copy into the notecard/paper insert and fold the notecard/paper insert so that it completely embraces the inscribed copy without folding the inscribed copy. It is okay for the notecard/paper insert to be a double fold (clamshell) or a trifold (pamphlet).
  10. Insert the combined paper into the envelope. Seal the envelope using your preferred method. If the taste of envelope glue is disastrous, you may use the tape or glue that you have at the ready to seal the envelope.
  11. Once sealed and dry to the touch (if you are using glue), place the envelope “face up” (that is, with the sealed side facing down). Optional: Mark the envelope with a title, personal mark, or other words or identification that declares the subject of the contents.
  12. CAREFULLY move the lit candle in its candle holder (or the light source you are using for dedication) from the other side of the working area to rest on top of the envelope.
  13. Face the tarot card (or the token) and declare to the card, “This is a mutual commitment, for mutual benefit.” Make this declaration at least three times, out loud or silently.
  14. Take up a contemplative pose at the working area. Be comfortable about it. Remain in place for a length of time that you feel is commensurate to the working. Do not remain for so long that you are discomforted or in pain.
  15. Once it is time to depart, declare to the tarot card (or token) that, “The matter is concluded.” Extinguish the candle (turn off the light source) and let all come to room temperature before disassembling the working.
  16. After the working is completed, place the sealed envelope with your important papers for safekeeping. You may dispose of any unneeded items or recycle them for other works if your paradigm permits.
  17. Return the tarot card to its deck. If you used a token, return the token to its resting place.

If the commitment isn’t working out, or if you find out that the relationship is not as equal as you were led to believe, creatively destroying the envelope and its contents will go far for breaking the commitment ties and freeing yourself.

As always, ice cream is strongly encouraged as a final grounding step, but is optional.
