Spelloween 2025: Day 8

Don’t mind me. Trying to get back into the groove of habits left behind. I just learned the hard way that live tarot reading is not in the cards for me, and likely won’t be again for some time. However, today is October 8, 2025, and it’s time to have some fun. Each day of the month of October, I’m going to put together a little spell that involves one of my favorite tools: Tarot cards.

None of this is meant to be taken seriously, unless you want it to be so. All of this is in fun and with good intentions. All of this is meant to bring me joy. If you get some of that joy-juice as well, then all the better.

These spells are meant to be modified, adapted, and used “as is” or as inspiration for your personal rituals.

Day 8: 6 of Cups – Do It Again, Do It Again!

Gather the following:

  • The 6 of Cups card from your tarot deck. If your deck is elemental focused, draw upon the Water element. If not using tarot, then draw upon the card or (flat) token that represents “memory”.
  • Space in or near the kitchen to do the work.
  • An oft-used mug or cup that can withstand (near) boiling water.
  • A tea bag, or some beverage option that requires “brewing” and/or “steeping” to complete. (Dairy and/or sweetener optional.)
  • Optional: A saucer to place the mug or cup on during the brewing/steeping process.
  • A kettle, pot, or microwave to heat water in.
  • An index card or piece of paper.
  • A writing utensil.
  • A napkin or paper towel.

The spell:

  1. Is there something you used to be able to do with ease? Something that ostensibly you should be able to do again at your command. Sure, you’re a little older now, and you can’t move around as glibly as you used to, but why can’t you do it again now? On your index card, write down that thing that you used to do and want to do again, but the skill is not coming up or needs some help finding its way through the older person you are now.
  2. In or near the kitchen, on a dry, clean surface, lay out the napkin or paper towel. Do what you do according to your custom to declare the napkin or paper towel to be the working space for your spell.
  3. On the napkin, place your tarot card, face up and facing you.
  4. If using a kettle or pot to heat your water, or are heating your water in the microwave using a microwave safe cup, begin the process of heating water for your beverage.
  5. Pick up the empty mug in your dominant hand, pick up the inscribed paper in your other hand, face the tarot card, and say (out loud or silently),
“This cup I’ve held so well in hand,
This cup that feels my silent plea,
This cup that knows what I have planned,
    Do not let it end.
This cup that knows my joy to see,
This cup that helps my heart to stand,
This cup that knows that I must be,
    Help me start again.”
  6. You can also pick up and/or hold both cards with the same hand, or with both hands. Do what you are comfortable with.
  7. If you are using a microwave to heat your water directly in the mug, fill the mug with water and heat it now, holding the incantation in your mind and heart.
  8. After speaking the incantation and before pouring the water, place the inscribed card on top of the tarot card. Then place the saucer on top of the card. (The inscribed card will protect the tarot card from the underside of the saucer.) Place the mug on the saucer.
  9. Prepare your drink of choice according to the usual method. There is no required minimum time for brewing and/or steeping, however it is suggested that you wait three minutes for the drink to not be too hot to drink if you are using an “instant” method of preparation.
  10. While you are waiting for the drink to brew/steep/cool down, reflect on the goal you have written on the inscribed card. What are the obstacles you are facing now? Do any methods of overcoming those obstacles come to mind? How sure are you that you can do this thing again in the manner you have done so before? Consider that you may have changed too much to do it exactly as you used to, but also consider that you may yet discover a new way to “do it again”.
  11. Once the drink has settled to your satisfaction, drink it.
  12. Spend a few more moments in contemplation and remembrance. Let the drink inspire you to alternative methods to achieve your initial goal.
  13. Have a sit as long as you need to sit. And then, thank the mug (out loud or silently) for being your companion once more. Place the mug and the saucer in the sink to wash up later.
  14. Place the inscribed card in a location you can review it often as a reminder that you can do the thing again, and that you will do the thing again.
  15. Place the tarot card back in its proper deck.
  16. Discard the napkin.

I did not seek out the 6 of Cups tonight. The tarot deck gave it to me as a random pull after several rounds of thoughtless shuffling. Something I have been able to do for over a decade completely failed me tonight, and I sit here in wonder that I was able to make this post.

I feel like giving up.

The tarot deck won’t let me.

Guess I’ll try to do it again, another time.
