Spelloween 2025: Day 9

Don’t mind me. Trying to get back into the groove of habits left behind. Today is October 9, 2025, and it’s time to have some fun. Each day of the month of October, I’m going to put together a little spell that involves one of my favorite tools: Tarot cards.

None of this is meant to be taken seriously, unless you want it to be so. All of this is in fun and with good intentions. All of this is meant to bring me joy. If you get some of that joy-juice as well, then all the better.

These spells are meant to be modified, adapted, and used “as is” or as inspiration for your personal rituals.

Day 9: Justice – Debtor’s Relief

Gather the following:

  • The Justice card from your tarot deck. If not using tarot, then get the card or token that represents “justice” or “balance”.
  • A means of propping up the card or token. (If you are in a situation where leaving tarot cards out can lead to unpleasant outcomes, skip this.)
  • 3 whole bay leaves.
  • A writing utensil capable of leaving marks on whole bay leaves.
  • Salt (iodized or potassium substitute okay)
  • Optional: A glass of drinking water.
  • Access to a working toilet.

The spell:

  1. If something feels “off” or “unbalanced” in your life, but you have done all the things that sensible people do or have advised to do, this is something to “balance your books”. Think of three things that you had promised to give or accomplish, but your circumstances now make keeping that promise impossible. On each bay leaf, write the title or key words representing that promise.
  2. Prepare your working area according to your custom, and place the tarot card in the middle of that space. If this is a space you can leave in peace for a while, try to prop up the card. Otherwise, just have the card face up and upright.
  3. Off to one side of the working area, place the three inscribed bay leaves.
  4. Off to the other side of the working area, place the salt (and optional glass of water).
  5. Take a deep breath, calm yourself, and address the card with the following (out loud or silently):
“O Justice! You who bears the Revealing Blade and the Scales of Consequence, hear me! I have been burdened with a debt I cannot pay and it weighs on me.”
  6. At this point, take the three inscribed bay leaves and display them one by one to the Justice card, announcing what the debts are as you do. Place the bay leaves at the foot of the card once done.
  7. Continue addressing the Justice card with the following:
“I am sorrowful that I cannot keep my word, and have born the consequences already. O Justice! This debt is too great a burden to bear, and it will stop me from working towards other good, for myself and others. Absolve me of this debt and release me from a burden I cannot carry. See! I take no filling food nor sweet treat, but instead let contrition rest upon my tongue.”
  8. Take a SMALL AMOUNT of salt. Just a pinch. No, less than that. If you’re trying to measure this, you are trying too hard. If you are on a salt-restricted diet, then take just a few grains of salt. (If you need a number, then measure out nine grains of salt.) Place that salt on your tongue and let it dissolve in your mouth. (If the taste of salt is too much to bear, drink the water.)
  9. Address the Justice card once more with the following:
“I give thanks for the mercy of the Court, and for the chance to once again do what is right. As these debts have been released from me, so I release them.”
  10. Get up, collect the three bay leaves, go to the toilet, and dispose of the bay leaves by flushing them. (Optional, crumble the bay leaves and dispose of them via discarding outside, placing them in a compost bin, or otherwise removing them from your residence.)
  11. Return to the working area. If necessary, restore the working area and card placement. Address the Justice card for one last time with the following:
“As the Court has decreed, so has it been done. My hands are unburdened and my relief unfolds. Thank you.”
  12. Disassemble your working area and place the tarot card back in its deck.

Do take care not to use this spell to rid yourself of a “bad” bargain that you want to unfairly distance yourself from. This is not a spell to get out of paying back your friend for the movie ticket they spotted for you last month. Consider carefully the consequences of letting these debts go, and whether you may later have the opportunity to fulfill them after all.
