Dream: The Midnight Sun

Of the many a vibrant and shifting scene,
‘Tis one that remains long after the dream.
For even as the warming day does begin,
Still my thoughts turn back to deep within,
To the black of the Midnight Sun

For while pondering symbols in the deepest of night,
Wondering when Morpheus would drop my sight,
I glanced out my window at a light unknown.
In my northern window where no light should have shown.
To the black of the Midnight Sun

I looked ’round my room, and noticed in bed,
Mostly covered in blankets was my sleeping head.
I knew at the sight, I’d been embraced by sleep,
As the strangest of light through my wall did seep,
From the black of the Midnight Sun

The light shown from without with the force of a gale,
And swept away my room, each wall, post, and nail.
Uprooted the trees, fence, bush, and flower.
T’was naught that could stand ‘gainst the fierce light’s power,
Of the black of the Midnight Sun

Away fled the world from the unblinking gaze.
All matter unmade by the light-devouring rays,
Until even the stars were dismissed from their posts.
And the vaults of the heavens were purged of their hosts,
By the black of the Midnight Sun

Yet here was I floating, dressed in clothing for sleep.
The only thing here in the vastness so deep.
I spread wide my arms, lifted hands now upturned,
Surrendered to the light that now over me burned,
With the black of the Midnight Sun

I accepted this moment, the Unblinking Eye’s hour,
Accepted I’m captive to the Dark Lord’s power.
Yielded to the inverse of the Day’s Shining Eye.
“Blind me, that I may see!”, my soul’s only cry,
To the black of the Midnight Sun

The dark light now palpable, it entwined all about me.
Removed me from my nightgown, dressed me for magick reality.
I find myself standing on a winding desert road,
Staring down a camel bearing a familiar human load.
Under the black of the Midnight Sun

She shrieks with delight, white robed Desert Traveler.
She leaps from the camel, and gathers me unto her.
“Beloved, you have come! And just in time to see!
I brought beer and offerings, you must come with me!”
Under the black of the Midnight Sun

Hand in hand we ascend to the south ridge’s rise,
Our voices conjoined, we feast with our eyes.
And when the Eye of Ra appears with glories in the east,
She and I drink the beer Ra gives only to his priests.
Under the black of the Midnight Sun

Deadly Sekhmet emerges, delights in devouring the field.
Death looks and sees me squarely, I know distance is no shield.
Yet I know I’ve died before, and will likely die again,
In this nonexistent world, devoid of Now and Then.
Under the black of the Midnight Sun

Side by side we descend to where the five camels wait.
We match each other in temperament, silence, and gait.
But there a man is waiting, speaking in the camel’s ear,
Dressed in fine embroidery that sparkles in the air.
Under the black of the Midnight Sun

He takes my hand and kisses, as if royalty are we.
“I’ve been waiting for you to return, now it’s time to come with me.”
He pulls me close and holds me, as if we were to dance,
He holds me tight and firmly, he doesn’t take a chance,
Under the black of the Midnight Sun

A step aside, a step behind, a leap launched in mid-twirl.
The desert folds inside out, revealing a different world.
The building glows with unnatural light, an inverse Kaaba I see.
My escort brings me to the south, where the Gatekeeper waits for me,
Under the black of the Midnight Sun

His eyes are blue, deep and pale, with living violet streaks.
He takes my face in his soft hands, kisses me on both cheeks.
“I can not grant you entry, until my trial you’ve won.
Now show me what you’ve learned, what workings have you done,
Under the black of the Midnight Sun.”

I knew my words were worthless here, can’t talk the doors apart.
I knew my force was all for naught, he’s immune to willful art.
Instead I took him by the hand and draped his body with mine,
And danced before the inverse light that poured o’er us like wine.
Under the black of the Midnight Sun

I danced of unknown splendors, of revelations still hidden.
I danced of masters and servants, of refusing to do what’s bidden.
I danced unending spirals, always nearing, never reaching the core.
I danced a language unknown to me, one that left me wanting more,
Of the black of the Midnight Sun

At last I ended and came to rest, at the place where I began.
His blue violet eyes kissed my sight, as his lips gently kissed my hand,
“My trial you’ve won, I must relent. The door opens, you may pass.
But when next we meet, I won’t be kind. You’re now a higher class,
Wearing the black of the Midnight Sun.”

The building stood, all darkness, all light, a contradiction to the eyes.
My Kaaba waited for me to enter, to hear the council of the wise.
The Embroidered Man, walks in arm with me, as we part the doors blood red.
The Gatekeeper remained at his southern post, admiring the shadows we shed,
From the black of the Midnight Sun.

The soft silk he wears, the soft voice he speaks, they impress deep within my mind.
But of the many things he said and did, the memories were left behind.
The symbols he explained, the sigils he drew, the knowledge that was made so clear,
Were left within the innermost rooms, shrouded by veils made severe,
By the black of the Midnight Sun.

All through the night, high in the north, did the inverse globe hold reign.
So dark is light, and white is black. There is loss and there is gain.
Highest thought and basest deed spring forth from the same well.
At dawn’s first gleam, am I released from the darkened ancient spell,
Of the black of the Midnight Sun.
