A blob of dense shadow tripped an alarm as it slid into my room. Since the ghosthound didn’t visibly react, I didn’t either but merely observed it. It looked over my dresser in a “oh that’s neat” sort of way, but touched nothing. It started to leave, but then leaned over me in a posture that a sneaking child does when they want to make sure the parental unit is truly asleep before they get up to some shit. So I broke my cover and reacted accordingly.

“What the fuck do you want?” The ghosthound snorted in mirth.

«AH! Oh! Uh… nothing… sorry… didn’t mean to wake you… shit… I’ll… uh… Hi?»

“Are you new to the house or a Regular?”

«New. Ma’am.»

“Here’s the rules. Don’t wake me up unless it’s an emergency or you’ll get hurt. Don’t fuck with the other humans in this house or you’ll get hurt. Keep peace, have peace, or I will eat you.”

It gulped. This darker-than-dark shadow that could envelop several people at once and devoured the ambient light around it, gulped. «Yes’m.»

I turned over and went back to sleep while the shadow made itself as small as possible and got comfortable in the corner Sir Nathaniel used to hang out in. I nudged the ghosthound who only grunted in more mirth before reclaiming the moved foot as his pillow.
