Don’t mind me. Trying to get back into the groove of habits left behind. Today is October 31, 2025, and it’s time to have some fun. Each day of the month of October, I’m going to put together a little spell that involves one of my favorite tools: Tarot cards.
None of this is meant to be taken seriously, unless you want to do just that. All of this is in fun and with good intentions. All of this is meant to bring me joy. If you get some of that joy-juice as well, then all the better.
These spells are meant to be modified, adapted, used “as is”, or as inspiration for your personal rituals. Feel free to change them to suit your personal circumstances.
Day 31: The Devil – Make It Happen
Gather the following:
- The Devil card from your personal tarot deck. If you are using an alternative deck, then pull the card that represents “rebellion”, “disobedience”, or the card that best represents the determination to do things according to personal ideal as opposed to any established way. As this working has the potential to be a long term event, you may want to make a copy or token of your chosen card.
- A section of note paper and a writing utensil. The note paper should large enough to wrap completely around the card.
- An envelope large enough to hold the tarot card without damaging the card.
The Magician and the Devil are two aspects of the same person. The key difference being the Magician feels justified in doing whatever they do in defiance of the status quo and the Devil just doesn’t care about justifications. The Devil doesn’t need a reason to do what they do, they only need to do it. Surely, it is just a matter of coincidence that what the Devil does goes against what the Powers That Be™ and against what Good and Proper People™ feel is good and proper to do. When you decide that this is the type of action you want to be engaging in, this spell helps you bring your interior forces to bear.
The spell:
- Prepare your working area according to your custom. There, place the Devil card, your note paper, your writing utensil, and the envelope.
- On your note paper, write down what it is that you want to accomplish and the reasons why you aren’t able to accomplish that task. This goal should be one that you are willing to tear through your comfort zone, if necessary. It should also be an achievable goal, regardless of difficulty. Be honest with yourself about the reasons why you are stymied. This includes any reservations you have on your behalf, well-meaning friends that keep getting in the way, or formal restriction by those who feel justified in obstructing you.
- Pick up the Devil card, hold it so that the front of the card is upright and facing you, and recite the following (out loud or silently):
“There’s times to work the status quo.
There’s times to make the working flow.
There’s times to hold the rule most tight.
There’s times to work in darkest night.
This time, I want to throw.
There’s times to bow, to be polite.
There’s times to scream and shout and fight.
There’s times to walk away and go.
There’s times to stand in faith and know.
This time, I work my might.” - Wrap the inscribed paper around the Devil card (or its copy/token) and place them in the envelope. Close the envelope so that the flap does not accidentally open. You may tape or seal the envelope according to your preferences.
- While the working is active for as long as the Devil card is in the envelope, you may close and/or clear your working area according to your preferences. You may return the Devil card to its tarot deck if you are using a copy in the envelope.
- Once you have achieved your goal, or once your goal has proceeded to the limits of your tolerance, remove the Devil card from the envelope. Dispose of the inscribed paper according to your preference and return the Devil card to its tarot deck if you are not using a copy. If you are using a copy of the Devil card, you may reuse it in future projects (magical and/or otherwise).
I leave it to the historians to review the history of tarot and of the Devil card in particular. I leave it to the philosophers to explain why the archetype of the Devil is a challenge to accept. I leave it to you to determine what to blame the Devil for and if you think it’s worthwhile to try.
